The Satsang Park Project
Project summary
We plan to achieve our aim of beautifying Delhi through plants by publicizing our efforts in beautifying one area, therefore motivating other Delhites to do the same. We're also inculcating eco friendly activities in Satsang Park, the park (which is actually just a barren square of land) we've chosen to beautify. Therefore, we want to create a spot where people can not only learn to be more environment- friendly, but also start appreciating natural beauty. We will focus on plants that are colorful, fragrant, diverse, and could attract butterflies or repel mosquitoes!
Our action plan
We made posters and brochures, which convey our cause and request donations of money, plants, times and ideas. We also will write to a local newspaper about our project.
We sold plenty of recycled or reused paper products like greeting cards, paper bags, gift tags, photo frames etc. The underprivileged children of an NGO called 'Umang' made some of these cards. Some people directly donated money and plants to us. We will now collect more funds by collecting recyclable waste and selling it to a 'kabadiwallah'.
First, with the help of a horticultural expert, we constructed a layout of the park. Now, the weeding and spreading of manure is going on. We will soon start constructing the compost pits, sourcing the bird baths etc. Finally, we will source and plant our diverse plants.
We will organize our volunteers and mobilize already designated gardeners.
Eco friendly activities:
We will have bird parks: with food, water and baths for birds. We will have compost pits and waste segregation bins. Our plants will attract butterflies, bees, birds etc. For watering the park, we will percolate rainwater from around the park, use 'cocopeet', which is made from coconut fibers and reduces water requirements by about 7 times. We'll use drip irrigation systems, like putting pots of water around the big trees, with little holes at the pots' bottoms, so that a little water flows down at a time.
